The Mâconnais sits at the southern end of Burgundy, where Chardonnay tends toward a rounder, sunnier expression than its cousins to the north. This is the entry point into the Lafon family's work in the region, an unoaked-leaning village wine drawn from Uchizy and neighboring communes. The fruit is pressed in whole clusters and fermented in large upright wooden foudres, then left to settle for about six months before bottling. The blend pulls from several sites, including grapes declassified from single-vineyard parcels, which is a good part of why it overdelivers for what it is.
The 2022 carried less malic acid than some years, yet it holds onto a bright, well-balanced freshness that keeps everything in line. Expect the clean, gently textured Chardonnay character the Mâconnais does so well, fruit and lift in even measure, nothing overworked. It is the kind of bottle that reads as straightforward at first and then quietly impresses with its poise.

The entry-level wine from Lafon’s Mâconnais operation offers spectacular value. The bottling includes grapes from Viré-Clessé, Uchizy, Viré, Chardonnay and Bussières, including grapes declassified from single-vineyard sites. The grapes are pressed as whole clusters and fermented in large, upright wooden foudres before ageing for six months. Although the wine in 2022 did not have a lot of malic acid, it still has a lovely freshness and equilibrium. (Decanter, January 2023)
