Horsepower Vineyards' 2022 Grenache from Sur Echalas Vineyard is a medium-bodied red from Washington's Walla Walla Valley, aged 15 months in neutral French oak. Walla Walla has become known for producing excellent Grenache, and this wine shows why.
The nose opens with white pepper spice and hints of incense, crushed rocks, and sage, with a whisper of blood orange. On the palate, the wine is supple and feral, lean and saline with sanguine meat and mineral earthiness that feels almost Pinot Noir-like in its delicacy. Red berries and rose infuse the mid-palate, while brisk acidity drives toward a finish of tart wild berries, violet, and citrus that stretches remarkably long. This is a wine built to age another decade or more, though its elegance makes it approachable now.

White pepper spice explodes on the nose of the 2022 Grenache Sur Echalas Vineyard, a medium-bodied wine aged 15 months in neutral French oak that’s feral on the palate in sanguine meat and earthiness. Supple texture and an ethereal quality make it nearly Pinot Noir-esque in character, while showing the appellation’s particular propensity for growing superb Grenache. Age another 10-12 years. (Jeb Dunnuck, July 2025)
Understated in the glass, the 2022 Grenache Sur Echalas Vineyard wafts up with hints of incense, crushed rocks, sage and blood orange. It is round and supple with rose-infused red berry fruits and herbal tones that sweep across the palate, all guided by brisk acidity. This resonates with citrus and tart wild berries, tapering off with dramatic length and an air of violet pastille that lingers impossibly long.
