Description
Grown high in the cool hills around Lamole, one of Chianti Classico's more elevated townships, this Gran Selezione comes from I Fabbri, where Susanna Grassi bottles it only in the vintages that merit the top tier of the appellation. The 2018 is all Sangiovese, organically farmed and drawn from the estate's oldest parcels (some planted in 1969), then aged in large oak cask. Expect elevation rather than sheer muscle here, the style that speaks more of aromatics and site than of weight.
The nose opens on cedar and chestnut, then turns floral with lilac and pressed rose before a savory, almost smoky edge of tobacco and iron settles in beneath dark fruit. On the palate it is midweight and fluid, carried by raspberry and currant, with chalky tannins that stay fine and give quiet, balanced support. An elaborate wine that trades power for eloquence.

From the cool, heady heights of the Lamole township, I Fabbri’s Gran Selezione may not have the power and sturdiness of those from warmer pockets, but it speaks eloquently and honestly of place. Owner Susanna Grassi crafts this only in optimal years from her oldest parcels with plantings dating back to 1969. The 2018 starts with cedar forest and chestnut nuances before divulging fragrant lilac and pressed rose. The palate is midweight and fluid on a backdrop of raspberry and currants. Only made in the best years, the organic I Fabbri 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is all Sangiovese aged in large oak cask. I tasted number 830 of 2,261 numbered bottles made. Softly textured and rich, the wine shows an ample bouquet of dark fruit, dried cherry, tobacco and spice. There is a savory edge to the bouquet with iron ore or campfire ember.
