Gran Selezione sits at the top of the Chianti Classico hierarchy, a designation reserved for wines meant to show more concentration and structure than the standard bottling. This one comes from I Fabbri in Tuscany, an organically farmed 2019 built on Sangiovese, the grape that gives the region its firm acidity and savory edge. The vintage lent good density to the fruit, and the wine reflects it.
Expect a medium-dark, layered nose of dark fruit, spice, and an earthy iris-root note. On the palate it is compact and firm, tightly knit rather than sprawling, with dark mineral tones and a lick of white pepper on the close. There is a streamlined quality to the whole thing, and the finish runs long. Some tasters find the oak assertive, so a little air or a few years of patience will help it settle.

This is an outstanding set of new releases from I Fabbri. The organic 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione opens to medium-dark richness and a more elaborate bouquet composed of dark fruit, spice and earthy iris root. This vintage naturally produced good density and richness in Sangiovese grapes, and indeed, this wine is compact, firm and nicely put together. There are dark mineral tones on the close with some spicy white pepper too. I love the streamlined feel of this wine and enjoy its very long finish. (Wine Advocate, September 2023)
The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione would be a good wine in any other setting, but here, the oak is overpowering. Black cherry, tobacco, spice, cedar and strong torrefaction a bound. The 2018 is still a very good wine, but it could have been more. Perhaps a lot more. (Vinous, August 2023)
