Description

Bolgheri sits on the Tuscan coast, where Bordeaux grapes ripen into something plusher and warmer than their French counterparts, and this Superiore bottling from I Greppi shows that character in a serious register. The 2022 is a full-bodied red built for cellaring, with a small portion of Petit Verdot (around 8 percent) folded into the blend to add spine and dark edge.

The color is nearly opaque, a saturated purple-red, and the aromatics run deep: boysenberry and plum, redcurrant, cigar box and polished leather, all wrapped in toasted oak, vanilla, and cedar. The wood is forward but it sits on a frame that can carry it, with bright, ripe acidity and a broad, well-defined texture that stays lifted rather than heavy. Balsamic and menthol threads run through the black fruit, and the tannins are fine-grained but firmly structural. Salinity and a touch of orange peel and pomegranate carry a long, fresh, savory finish. This is a wine that rewards patience; give it several years and it will keep going for a long time.

A highly luxurious style, the 2022 Greppicaia pours a dark purple/red color and is very pronounced and saturated with layered oak spice, toasted vanilla, cedar, boysenberry, plum, cigar box, and polished leather. While the oak is quite forward, this is a wine of high quality, with a bright spine of ripe acidity to balance it out and a full-bodied, broad-shouldered and well-defined, ripe texture that doesn’t feel weighted. It has a very long, salty finish with bright redcurrant fruit lasting long on the palate. I can't help but be impressed here, although it’s going to need several years in a cellar and is built for the long haul. Drink 2028-2050. (Jeb Dunnuck, March 2025)

Greppicaia is a deep and dark yet precise wine in 2022, with black fruit and balsamic herb scents leading into an intense, silky mouthful of quasi-austere yet inherently juicy black berries framed by balsamic and menthol twists. Sapidity and salinity provide relief and refreshment, and the fine-grained tannins are well integrated yet structural. Touches of orange peel and pomegranate emerge on the long, fresh, succulent finish. Class. 8% Petit Verdot. (Decanter, June 2025)
