Description
The hills of Teramo in northern Abruzzo hold the region's most serious expression of Montepulciano, and the Colline Teramane designation is reserved for wines built to age. This Riserva from Illuminati, the 2019 Pieluni, carries the extra ripeness and structure that the Riserva tier demands, a full-bodied red made entirely from Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grown in that inland, cooler pocket.
The nose leans dark and inviting, cherries steeped in rum, cocoa, a tarry edge and a lift of oak spice. On the palate it is generous and soft-textured, with juicy acidity carrying ripe wild berry fruit before the structure asserts itself. The finish is long and gently tannic, a little grainy still from the wood, with bitter dried cherry, a note of black tea concentration and a floral hint of violet that fades slowly. A year or two of patience will resolve those tannins further.

The 2019 Colline Teramane Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva Pieluni opens with a seductive bouquet of rum-soaked cherries, dark chocolate and oaken spice. It is soft-textured, with juicy acidity and ripe wild berry fruits that swirl throughout. Its structure comes forward through the finish, long and gently tannic with a black tea-like concentration and hints of violet pastille that fade slowly. (Vinous)
A rich and ripe nose with dark chocolate character and a tarry accent. Slightly grainy with a full body and notes of bitter dried cherries and herbs. Some wood tannins linger in its lengthy finish. Should be more resolved in one or two more years. Try in 2025. (James Suckling)
