JJ Prum's 2021 Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese comes from a vineyard site in the Mosel's Graach subregion, one of Germany's most respected Riesling terroirs. The wine is made in the Spätlese style, meaning the grapes were harvested at peak ripeness, which yields natural sweetness balanced by the region's characteristic acidity.
The wine opens with a whisper of smoke before unveiling ripe melon, juicy pear, and flinty peach. On the palate, it's full and flowing, with sweetness that energizes rather than weighs, mouth-watering and fresh throughout. A yeasty undertone adds texture and depth. The 2021 Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese is very clear, bright and elegant on the saline and beautifully balanced nose that delivers bright and quite intense fruit aromas intermingled with weathered slate and also citrus aromas. On the palate, this is a round and intense, mouth-filling and lush, almost creamy-textured Himmelreich with a long, complex and saline finish. It needs some time, though. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023.
