Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon tends toward depth and structure, the grape's firm tannins softened by the valley's warmth, and this 2022 bottling from Joseph Phelps Vineyards sits squarely in that tradition. A still red built around Cabernet from one of California's defining regions for the varietal, it reflects the dark-fruited, full-bodied style that has made Napa Cabernet a reference point for collectors and dinner tables alike.

Bright, lifted, black and red fruits with aromas of dark cherries, damson. (James Suckling, July 2025)
The 2022 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautifully composed wine. It offers precise Bing cherry and blackberry fruit layered with spiced plum aromatics, tobacco, sage, and a fragrant ironstone mineral character. The palate is plush and juicy, with satiny tannins and a sweetly spiced finish. It was aged for 16 months in 48% new oak (50% French, 50% American) and 52% used French and American oak barrels before bottling. (Decanter, February 2025)
The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is terrific, especially for a wine of its level and production. Aromatic, medium in body and impeccably balanced, the 2022 is seriously impressive. It is perhaps a bit more floral and lighter than most years, but its balance and overall harmony are beyond reproach. This is a strong showing. New oak is 45%, 27% French and 18% American. (Vinous)
