A four-grape white built on Chenin Blanc (40%), with Chardonnay, Viognier, and a splash of Sauvignon Blanc filling in around it, this is the 2023 In Vain from Kinero, made on California's Central Coast. It spent 16 months in French oak, only a fifth of it new, so the wood is a frame rather than a flavor. The result is a blend that reads as a single, coherent wine rather than a committee of varietals.
Expect exotic stone fruit and melon up front, laced with spice and a saline, crushed-stone minerality, with minty herbal notes surfacing as it opens in the glass. The body is medium and the texture leans gently oily, but the wine never loses its focus or tension. What holds it together is energy: a zesty, high-toned finish carried by that salinity, gaining breadth the longer it sits. Pure and precise now, with the structure to develop over the next several years.

Based on 40% Chenin Blanc, 28% Chardonnay, 19% Viognier, and 13% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2023 In Vain reveals exotic stone fruits, melon, spice, and salty, crushed stone-like minerality, with minty herb notes emerging with air. It's medium-bodied and pure, with a vibrant, focused mouthfeel and beautiful salinity on the finish. Aged 16 months in 20% new French oak, this impeccably made white will evolve nicely for 4-5 years. Drink 2025-2030. (Jeb Dunnuck, August 2025)
The 2023 In Vain Old Vine White Blend harmoniously melds orchard and stone fruit aromas with floral, herbal and mineral notes, introducing a deep, elegantly oily palate that retains focus and tension. The finish is zesty and high-toned, gradually developing additional breadth and nuance with time in the glass, never losing sight of the energy and verve that run through the wine. A beautiful combination of energy, zest and power that should drink beautifully through the next 5-7 years. A blend of 40% Chenin, 28% Chardonnay, 19% Viognier and 13% Sauvignon Blanc, the wine was raised for 16 months in 20% new French oak. (Wine Advocate, October 2025)
