Klein Constantia's 2022 Estate Red is a Constantia Valley blend built on Cabernet Sauvignon (58%), Petit Verdot (33%), Syrah (8%), and Malbec (1%). The elevated Petit Verdot proportion shapes the character of this vintage, which sees extended barrel maturation and emerges with more floral presence than its predecessor.
The nose opens with crushed violet and peony, clean and well-defined. On the palate, the wine shows impressive depth and concentration, with black fruit and spice moving through a balanced frame touched by white pepper and grilled herb. The Syrah and Petit Verdot assert themselves more visibly here, lending florality and structure to a medium-plus finish that feels assured and composed.

The 2022 Red Blend Estate has even more Petit Verdot than the 2021 (33% of the blend) but underwent the same barrel maturation. Due to the higher proportion of Petit Verdot, there are more floral scents on the nose here—crushed violet and peony, well defined and pure. The palate is neatly balanced with a little more concentration and florality than the previous vintage. There’s impressive depth and a judicious dash of white pepper on the finish. Excellent.
The Klein Constantia 2022 Constantia Valley Red is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Petit Verdot, 8% Syrah and 1% Malbec. The wine is the same as the 2021 also reviewed here, but the word "Estate" has been dropped from its name. I find that the Syrah and Petit Verdot come through stronger in this vintage, and the Cabernet Sauvignon is less dominant. There is bold black fruit, spice, white peppercorn and grilled herb over a medium-plus finish.
