La Réserve de Malartic is the second wine of Château Malartic Lagravière, a Pessac-Léognan estate in the Graves subregion of Bordeaux. This 2016 is a Bordeaux blend with a backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, rounded out with 5% Cabernet Franc. It represents an opportunity to experience the house's quality at a more approachable price point, particularly in a vintage as successful as 2016.
The wine shows ripe, seductive blueberry and black fruit character in a medium body that drinks with ease now. There's a silky, elegant finish that invites immediate enjoyment, though the wine carries enough structure and poise to reward patience. The palate displays supple tannins and vibrant acidity, with secondary notes of briar, undergrowth, pencil lead, and tobacco adding complexity. There's a touch of austerity that suggests youth and cellaring potential, but the balance and purity at the finish make this approachable from the moment it's poured.

This is ripe and supple, but has an elegant, medium body and a long, silky finish that make it very easy to enjoy right now. Seductive blueberry character. Drink or hold.
2016 was such a great vintage, meaning that this is a brilliant year to head to the second wine for value and quality. There's clear depth to the rich fruit structure, full of poise and balance. It feels younger than the 2017, more closed, with a touch of austerity but with excellent delivery of black fruits. There's so much to enjoy in this wine, and it's a clear sign of the confidence that the Bonnies now have with Malartic. 5% Cabernet Franc finishes the blend.
The 2016 La Réserve de Malartic has a straightforward bouquet with briar and undergrowth notes tincturing the black fruit. The medium-bodied palate displays quite supple tannin. The acidity is nicely judged, and there is an almost pastille-like purity toward the finish. Recommended.
