Mountain-grown Cabernet tends to carry more grip and earthiness than its valley-floor cousins, and this bottling from Sonoma Mountain leans fully into that character. It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, drawn from the Laurel Glen Vineyard where the vines trace back to 1968, and the 2019 spent 20 months in French oak, just over half of it new. The site has been certified organic by CCOF since 2014 under viticulturist Phil Coturri.
Pour it and the color runs nearly black at the core, with a resinous, savory nose of pipe tobacco, dried black cherry, cedar, and polished leather. The palate is full-bodied and built on mineral, gravelly tannins, layering red and blackcurrant fruit against loamy earth, walnut husk, and a note of salted dark chocolate. It carries a distinctly mountainous feel, firm but balanced, and finishes long on turned earth, truffle, and cigar box. Rewarding now and structured to hold for years.

I really love this style of Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a bold, earthy red with beautifully layered red and blackcurrant fruit, rich loamy earth, and tobacco spice, accented by fragrant cedarwood and walnut husk. Full-bodied, with mineral-rich tannins and salted dark chocolate, the wine builds through notes of turned earth, black truffle, tobacco, and cigar box. Positively outstanding. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the Laurel Glen Vineyard on Sonoma Mountain, where Cabernet vines were first planted in 1968. From the 2019 vintage, it was aged for 20 months in 55% new French oak barrels. Certified organic by CCOF since 2014, thanks to the efforts of viticulturist Phil Coturri. (Decanter, May 2025)
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma Mountain Estate pours a black/red color and is resinous with aromas of pipe tobacco, dried black cherries, cedar, and polished leather. The palate has a more mountainous feel, with full-bodied structure, a gravelly texture, and a rich but balanced finish. It’s in a good place now but should continue to drink well over the coming 10 years. (Jeb Dunnuck, July 2025)
