Description

Pinot Gris grown on a Grand Cru site in Alsace can carry real weight without tipping into sweetness, and this is the dry, gastronomic style the grape does so well here. The bottling comes from Leon Beyer's Comtes d'Eguisheim cuvée, sourced from the Eichberg Grand Cru and released under the 2013 vintage, a year that Yann Beyer counts as a strong one for the variety, with fruit reaching full ripeness.

The color is a bright yellow, and the nose leans ripe and generous: peach, a whiff of baked strawberry, sweet spice and a floral top note. Entry is smooth and refined, then the middle fills out, round and full-bodied with plenty of extract behind it. What keeps it lively is the finish, a limey, faintly saline lift that pulls the richness taut and carries long. There is real purity here, and the acid and fruit sit in careful balance right through the creamy close.

Bright yellow. Intense aromas of peach, strawberry pie, sweet spices and flowers. Smooth, ripe and rather refined on entry, then rich and suave in the middle palate, showing plenty of extract for the year. Limey minerality and a lovely sugar/acid balance characterize the long, creamy finish. Knockout Pinot Gris. (Vinous, February 2016)

The 2013 Pinot Gris Cuvée des Comtes d'Eguisheim has a clear and aromatic bouquet of ripe and slightly stewed white fruits along with some mineral flavors. Full-bodied, round and elegant on the palate, this is a dense but fresh and finessed Pinot with a long and salty, tension-filled finish. It is very aromatic in the aftertaste and reveals a remarkable purity and elegance. Excellent and even better than 17 months ago when I tasted it for the first time. According to Yann Beyer, 2013 was a great vintage for Pinot Gris and the grapes were perfectly ripe. (Wine Advocate, March 2017)
