Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair's 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is a Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy's most storied vineyard sites. The fruit comes from old vines planted on the border with Échézeaux, in the upper section of the climat known as Baudes Hautes.
The wine opens with ripe mulberry and plum aromas layered with earth, mineral, and saddle leather. On the palate it shows a supple, plump texture with firm but finely grained tannins that feel silky rather than harsh or astringent. The winemaker's deliberate extraction technique during fermentation has softened the wine's natural tannic structure, resulting in a wine that feels polished and integrated without sacrificing grip or age-worthiness.

There are marvelous ripe mulberry and plum fruit aromas here with earth, mineral, and saddle leather notes. The tannins are firm but finely grained and silky; there is a supple, plump texture on the palate with no tart or astringent qualities. The grapes come from three-quarters of a hectare of old vines on the border with Echézeaux in Baudes Hautes. Liger-Belair relates that the wine is by nature very tannic, and by punching down fairly firmly, he can soften (‘enrobe’) the texture. His strategy has undoubtedly succeeded in judging from this lovely wine. (Decanter)
The 2021 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has a smooth and harmonious bouquet but for me it lacks a bit of cohesion and depth of fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, quite strict and linear. Liger-Belair mentioned that he is trying to get away from rustic tannins, but I still find this coarse on the finish.
