Syrah sits right at the ripening edge in the Willamette Valley, which is exactly what makes this bottling interesting. Grown on the eastern side of the Eola-Amity Hills at around 500 feet, in the Symbion Vineyard (vines planted in 2001, farmed by Steve Doerner), it is a cool-climate expression of the grape rather than a sun-baked one. Chris Butler fermented the 2023 with 70% whole clusters and aged it 18 months in used oak, a light-handed approach meant to keep the fruit's lift and savory edge intact.
Expect aromatics that lean floral and spiced: violets and rose petal alongside cracked peppercorn, woodsmoke, olive and a whiff of charcuterie. The palate is racy and cool-toned, with taut red and black fruits (blackberry, blueberry, redcurrant) that carry a saline, mineral tinge and a thread of dried herbs. Crunchy, chalky tannins give it grip while fresh acidity keeps everything energetic, and a minty note lingers on a long, refined finish. Pretty and precise more than powerful.

A Syrah from the eastern side of the Eola-Amity Hills, 500ft of elevation. Symbion Vineyard, there's great lift to this wine, redolence of its cool climate origins. Alluring aromas of spices and florals, and savoury notes of herbs and brine. The palate is electric, with 70% whole cluster, 18 months in neutral oak. Violets, rose petals and taut energetic fruits framed by saline notes of savoury herbs and exotic Moroccan spices, all framing wild blue and red fruits. (Decanter, May 2025)
Peppery wild berries mingle with dusty sage, cedar shavings and exotic spice as the 2023 Syrah Symbion Vineyard comes to life in the glass. This wine is cool-toned and racy in style, with fresh acidity and sleek red and black fruits that wash across the palate, leaving a tactile mineral tinge in their wake. Crunchy tannins linger, yet the mouth waters for more, and the 2023 Syrah leaves a minty freshness to resonate. Remarkably pretty and wonderfully refined. (Vinous)
The 2023 Syrah Symbion Vineyard comes from vines planted in 2001 and farmed by Steve Doerner. It was fermented with 70% whole clusters and matured for 18 months in used oak. “Even though it’s warmer, increasingly we will have more good Syrah years in the Willamette Valley,” winemaker Chris Butler explains. “It’s still just at the edge of being able to ripen Syrah, so you get those cool-climate characters, which I’m a sucker for.” The Symbion has pure aromas of blackberry, blueberry and redcurrant with nuances of peppercorn, woodsmoke, olive and charcuterie. The medium-bodied palate offers an ideal balance of dark fruit and savory character. It’s framed by chalky tannins and fresh acidity and has a long, elegant finish. 122 cases were made.
