Syrah at its most serious comes from the granite hill of Hermitage in the northern Rhône, and this bottling draws on old parcels in the lieux-dits Les Bessards and Les Plantiers. Marc Sorrel's 2023 was fermented with whole clusters, aged for eighteen months, and bottled without fining or filtration, an unadorned approach now in the hands of Guillaume Sorrel. This is Hermitage in its classic register: concentrated, structured, and built for the long haul.
Expect a fragrant lift of violet and lilac, cracked pepper, and licorice over a base of cassis and dark berry fruit, with a streak of graphite running through it. It is medium to full-bodied, layered around a seamless core of fruit that vibrant acidity keeps taut, and the whole-cluster inclusion lends a tensile, almost nervy edge. The tannins are velvety and fresh rather than heavy, and the finish carries on with real finesse. There is fruit to enjoy now, but this has the frame to reward two decades of patience.

Sorrel’s 2023 Hermitage was crafted from vines planted in the lieux-dits Les Bessards and Les Plantiers on granite soils. Vinified with 100% whole bunches and matured for 18 months, it was neither fined nor filtered. Despite being the most reductive wine in the cellar, it wafts from the glass with aromas of lilac, violet, pepper, dark berries and cassis mingled with licorice. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it’s built around a seamless core of fruit supported by vibrant acidity. It has a tensile profile derived from whole clusters and is framed by velvety and fresh tannins, concluding with a long, ethereal finish. This is an exquisite wine that should age gracefully over the next two decades and beyond. (Wine Advocate, May 2026)
The complex 2023 Hermitage begins its sensory story with pronounced violets, graphite dust, black cherry, fleshy tones and peppery gradations. Medium to full-bodied and built around sleek tannins, the 2023 is a thrilling Hermitage from the talented Guillaume Sorrel. There’s real finesse and precision on the highly elegant finish.
