Description

White Hermitage is built mostly on Marsanne, and this 2023 from Marc Sorrel follows that path, a Marsanne-led blend rounded out with a little Roussanne, drawn from the Les Greffieux and Les Plantiers lieux-dits on clay and sand soils in the northern Rhône. The fruit here comes off relatively young vines, and the result is a full-bodied dry white in the classic Hermitage mold, generous rather than lean.

The nose opens on flinty, stony intensity woven through ripe apricot and Mirabelle plum, with blanched almond, honeysuckle and a soft note of brioche and pastry filling in behind. On the palate it is plush and concentrated, a wave of quince and pear fruit that arrives ripe and powerful yet stays silky and precise. Acidity is on the milder side, so the wine leans on its density and a faint phenolic bitterness (a Marsanne trait) to keep the long, savory finish taut. Drinking well from release.

Incredible flinty intensity on the nose, but also ripe apricots, Mirabelle plums and blanched almonds. Then a giant wave of concentration crashes over the palate, but this is so silky and pristine that you beg it to return. The finish is almost perfect. There’s a hint of bitterness from marsanne. A cuvee of marsanne with a small amount of roussanne based on the Greffieres site from relatively young vines. Drink from release. (James Suckling)

Almond, brioche and marzipan nose. Full-bodied, very generous, plump and juicy, with quince and pear fruit. Surprisingly ripe, with fairly generous alcohol and only mild acidity but good concentration. Ripe, fresh and powerful. From lieux-dits Les Greffieux (80%) and Les Plantiers (20%); clay and sand soils. (Decanter, October 2024)

The 2023 Hermitage Blanc shows its opening aromas of pronounced yellow apple, fresh pear, honeysuckle and lemon peel. Softly inflected pastry and wet stone add more aromatic breadth. Full-bodied, round and sapid, the 2023 checks out with that delicious phenolic bitterness on its long and totally savoury finale. (Vinous, January 2026)
