Description

The hill of Hermitage in the northern Rhône gives Syrah its most concentrated, age-worthy expression, and this Le Greal comes from Marc Sorrel's old vines in the Les Greffieux and Le Meal sections, planted back in 1926. It is a single-varietal red from the 2022 vintage, fermented with all of its stems (100% whole clusters), a choice that shapes both its perfume and its energy.

The nose is dark and layered, blackberry and ripe black cherry edged with violet and rose, then licorice, cedar, black pepper, and a graphite, almost ferrous mineral streak. On the palate it is deeply concentrated and full-bodied, built with real vertical structure, yet the tannins are refined and the mid-palate stays lively, so the whole thing carries an unexpected lift. The finish is savory, long, and finely drawn. This is a wine to hold; it will grow more racy and complete with several years in the cellar.

Incredible concentration and every bit as much finesse. The forest berry notes are right off the scale, just like the stony minerality, which some may find too much, but for me is totally exciting. The drive and energy at the finish must be experienced to be believed. Decades of aging potential. From vineyards planted in 1926 by the winemaker\'s grandfather in the Les Greffieux and Le Meal sections of the hill of Hermitage. Best from 2027. (James Suckling)

A strong candidate for the title of the wine of the vintage, the 2022 Hermitage Le Greal is gorgeous. Evoking a perfumed, complex and vibrant bouquet of blackberry, rose petal, violet, flowers and dark cherries mingled with lovely notes of lead pencil, it's suave and sappy, complete and deep, with a multidimensional core of fruit and beautifully refined tannins enhanced by an energetic mid-palate that segues into a long, perfumed and ethereal finish due to the use of whole bunches. Truly gorgeous. It should gain raciness with age. (Wine Advocate, March 2025)

Dark and brooding, the 2022 Hermitage Le Gréal radiates notes of ripe black cherry, blackberry, dried violet, licorice, cedar and a sprinkle of black pepper. Wafts of graphite add a ferrous touch. Firmly built like a skyscraper, the full-bodied 2022 is a deeply concentrated red Hermitage, yet maintains spot-on balance through vivid freshness, which can partially be traced back to using 100% whole clusters during fermentation. Winding down with flawless elegance on the savory finish, the 2022 requires extended bottle aging before unleashing its full potential. Only 3,600 bottles were produced. (Vinous)
