Grown in the Alpine reaches of the Valais in Switzerland, this is a Pinot Noir from Charrat, bottled by Marie-Thérèse Chappaz under her Grain label from the 2023 vintage. Pinot Noir finds a natural home in these high, sun-exposed river valleys, where cool nights tend to preserve the freshness and lifted red-fruit character the grape is known for.

From the left bank coteaux (bottom of the slope) and picked about a week to 10 days later than Les Esserts, the 2023 Grain Pinot Charrat opens with a pure, elegant and aromatic bouquet of sour cherries, red berries and flowers intertwined with spicy and stony notes. Silky and juicy on the palate, this is a dense and savory, medium-bodied and textured Pinot Noir with fine tannins that intermingle with the saline terroir acidity, leading to an intense, aromatic and finely tannic finish with good length and complexity. It was aged in Burgundian barrels for 12 months and bottled in early December with 14.4% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in Fully, March 2025. (Wine Advocate, July 2025)
