Cool-climate Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast tends toward brightness and lift, and the Lyra bottling from Marine Layer, made by Rob Fischer, sits squarely in that register. It draws on fruit from several coastal sites, with about 30% whole-cluster fermentation adding a subtle structural spine and roughly a quarter of the barrels new French oak, leaving the wood as an accent rather than a statement. This is the 2023 vintage, medium-bodied and built for freshness.
Expect a bright ruby color and a nose that opens with ripe cranberry and wild red berries, fresh roses, crushed flowers, and a lift of bright herbs and spice. There is a savory undertone running underneath the fruit, dried lavender, rosehip, and a touch of choke cherry, that keeps things interesting. On the palate it is fleshy but energetic, with fine tannins and a saline freshness on the finish. The stems never announce themselves. What comes through is generous, open-knit fruit, easy to enjoy now and structured to hold for years.

Marine Layer winemaker Rob Fischer uses 30% whole cluster on this wine, mostly from Marine Layer, Gap's Crown, Jentoft and Whistler Vineyard, with some fruit from Uproad as well. It's fleshy, and ripely fruited with wild red berries and a savoury undertone this wine sees about 25% new French oak. Savoury herbs and dried lavender with notes of rosehip oil and choke cherries add nuance and complexity to the rich fruits on the fore palate. (Decanter, March 2025)
A bright medium ruby color, the nose of the 2023 Pinot Noir Lyra is lifted and fresh, with focused, bright spice notes of ripe cranberries, cinnamon, fresh roses, and bright herbs. Medium-bodied, this carries seamlessly to the palate, with vibrant, fresh energy, fine tannins, and salty fresh accents. Drink 2025-2035. (Jeb Dunnuck, July 2025)
The 2023 Pinot Noir Lyra is a fine introduction to the Marine Layer wines. Spice, crushed flowers, red berry fruit and a kiss of French oak are all laced together. This open-knit, inviting Pinot is irresistible. The 30% stems are not evident—instead, it is the fruit that speaks loudest. What a joyous wine this is. (Vinous)
