A Bordeaux blend grown in Goriška Brda, the hilly winegrowing zone in western Slovenia hard against the Italian border, this bottling from Marjan Simcic leans on Cabernet Franc for its backbone. Half the blend is Cabernet Franc, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot filling out the balance in equal parts, a structure that borrows Bordeaux's logic of firm frame softened by plumper fruit. The 2016 vintage carries the name Unico M.
The nose is tangy and peppery, with fresh currants and a leafy, tobacco lift and even a flicker of chili chocolate. It drinks with real fluidity, the tannins fine and silky rather than gripping, and the finish is long and seamlessly resolved. There is intensity underneath the ease, so it shows beautifully now but has the composure to hold.

Really tangy, fresh and peppery on the nose with a beautiful lift and piquancy to the tobacco and fresh currants. A hint of chili chocolate, too. Really fluid and drinkable now, but shows intensity and fine, really silky tannins. Long and really melted. A blend of 50% cabernet franc, 25% cabernet sauvignon and 25% merlot. Delicious now, but can hold, too. (James Suckling)
