Pinot Noir grown along the Slovenian side of Brda, the hilly winegrowing zone that straddles the border with Italy's Collio, takes on a particular delicacy here. This is the 2020 Opoka Cru bottling from Marjan Simcic, a single-site red that treats the grape with restraint rather than force, favoring perfume and texture over weight.
The nose leans autumnal, with dried orange peel, cedar shavings, warm spice and dark cherry fruit that has just begun to dry at the edges. On the palate it turns silken and round, bright red berries and a lift of citrus moving beneath a floral, rose-petal top note. Fine, closely woven tannins give the finish its shape, carrying raspberry and a touch of licorice through a long, balanced close.

The 2020 Pinot Noir Opoka Breg Cru is impossible to ignore with its cascade of autumnal spices, dried orange peels, cedar shavings and dried black cherries. Silken and soothingly round, it offers bright red berry fruits and nuances of citrus that swirl beneath an air of rosy inner florals. A web of fine-grained tannins frames the finish beautifully, leaving hints of raspberry and licorice through the long and beautifully balanced finale. The 2020 is a testament to the possibilities of Pinot Noir from Brda. I can’t recommend this highly enough. (Vinous, October 2025)
