Description

Marqués de Murrieta's 2020 Rioja Reserva comes from Rioja Alta, the cooler subregion that favors elegance over power. This is a traditional blend built on Tempranillo (82%), with Graciano, Mazuelo, and Garnacha in supporting roles. Twenty-one months in American oak and time in bottle have given it composure and depth.

The wine shows floral and mineral character, with aromas of cherry, dried flowers, and plum touched by subtle oak and vanilla. On the palate it's refined rather than heavy, with fine-boned structure and silky tannins that have softened into elegance. Crunchy black fruit runs through the middle, held up by keen acidity that gives the wine verve and length. There's a spicy edge to the finish. This is lighter and more delicate than heavier Riojas, meant to be enjoyed now for its freshness and grace.

Decanter

Subtle rusticity paired with assertive elegance, in a wine that marries subtle minerality with chalky tannins and poised, crunchy fruit. It's vibrant throughout, with acid verve holding the rich, robust black fruit at the core. Long finish, with a spicy lining.

Wine Advocate

The 2020 Rioja Reserva, their flagship wine, comes from the 300 hectares of estate vineyards. Here, Tempranillo is the backbone, making up 82% of the blend in the low-yielding vintage of 2019, complemented with 8% Graciano, 7% Mazuelo and 3% Garnacha. It has controlled ripeness at 14% alcohol, with a pH of 3.65 and 5.1 grams of acidity. I loved the aromatics here—floral and elegant, more in the style of the 2018 than the 2019. it's lighter, more elegant, fine-boned and has a silky texture and very fine tannins. Both 2019 and 2020 are very good, but 2020 is more my style. 980,000 bottles produced. It was bottled after 21 months in American oak barrels.

Vinous

The 2020 Marqués de Murrieta is 82% Tempranillo, 7% Mazuelo, 8% Graciano and 3% Garnacha from Rioja Alta. Aromas of cherries, dried flowers, undergrowth, plum and subtle oak define a classic profile, with a touch of vanilla adding another familiar accent. Smooth, with refined tannins and moderate freshness, it's slightly diluted due to the vintage but remains accomplished and balanced.
