Cool Pacific influence shapes the Chardonnay grown in California's Monterey County, where a long, moderate growing season lets the fruit ripen slowly and hold its acidity. This bottling from Martin Woods, the Mozaik Chardonnay, comes out of that maritime setting, a style that tends to favor freshness and clarity over weight.

The 2023 Mozaik is a blend of sites, with lemon cream and brightening by verbena taut acidity, minerality, crisp salted lemon wedge. There's sweet, creamy citrus. Crushed granite minerality and salt. 1/3 local Oregon oak. Lemon curd, chalky minerality, green mangoes, white pepper. Fruit from Pearlstad, on the ‘Eola bench’, an ancient landslide with not much topsoil, creates mineral-focused wines that are lean and electric. Winemaker Evan Martin believes these unique Pearlstad soils are the closest thing to limestone in the Willamette. (Decanter, May 2025)
The 2023 Chardonnay Mozaik bursts from the glass with savory herbs, crushed rocks, menthol and lime-laced green apples. It is seamlessly silken in feel, with opulently ripe orchard fruit and nearly glycerol concentration offset by a saline resonance throughout. Spicy notes emerge on the finish, which is incredibly long and full of zesty tension, nearly crunchy in texture. Expertly balanced. This wine is a mix of the Yamhill Valley and Pearlstad Vineyards.
