Description

Pinot Noir grown in Oregon's Eola-Amity Hills tends toward brightness and lift, and the Jesse James bottling from Martin Woods leans into that while adding structure. Evan Martin draws on a site planted in 1996, uniting three blocks (Pommard, Dijon, and Wadenswil clones) so that each contributes a different facet: the Dijon interplanting in particular lends a frame of skin tannin that gives the wine real seriousness. The 2023 is a full-bodied wine that manages both power and finesse, closer in spirit to Burgundy than to anything showy.

Give it time in the glass and it unfolds, crushed stone yielding to black cherry and a flicker of wild blueberry, with clove and pressed herbs threaded through. There's ripe framboise and lush strawberry, a savory note of leather and mossy earth, and a saline, mineral tension that keeps everything lively. Tannins are refined and finely woven, the mouthfeel round but seriously built, and the finish carries lavender and chalk to a length that lingers. This will reward patience and hold for many years.

Jeb Dunnuck

The 2023 Pinot Noir Jessie James Vineyard is exceptional and offers both finesse and power, reminiscent of Vosne-Romanée in style. Layered and complete with leather, ripe framboise, pressed herbs, mossy earth, and a mineral frame, it’s full-bodied, with refined tannins and stunning length. This is possibly the best wine I have tasted from Evan Martin Woods to date. Drink 2027-2050. (Jeb Dunnuck, August 2025)

The 1996 planting of this Eola Amity site and its power and refinement married together is how winemaker Evan Martin thinks about it. In the 2023 vintage, he unites the three blocks, one Pommard, one Dijon and one Wadesnwil. All three charge this wine with complexity. An interplanting of Dijon brings a framing of skin tannin, taking the wine up a notch and giving seriousness to the mouthfeel. "Classic, savoury, noble reduction" Red fruited and lively with lush strawberries on the palate, fleshy red fruits, mint, and a tingly bit of saline minerality at the soaring finish. (Decanter, May 2025)

Vinous

The 2023 Pinot Noir Jessie James Vineyard evolves in the glass as crushed stone gives way to black cherries and a hint of wild blueberry, complicated by clove. Elegance defines the palate, with round textures and saline mineral tones up front as ripe red berry fruit and a hint of chalk settle on the senses. It finishes with outstanding length, leaving liquid lavender tones and a staining of fine tannins that resonate. (Vinous)
