Description

The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater sits within the broader Walla Walla area on the Oregon side of the line, and it produces a style of Syrah that has little in common with the New World's plusher versions: savory, mineral, unmistakably marked by place. This 2023 from Martin Woods draws on Rocks District fruit and follows a hands-on path in the cellar, with roughly half the stems retained during fermentation, an extended maceration reaching toward six weeks, and a year and a half resting on its lees. Evan Woods was clearly chasing structure and tension here rather than sheer ripeness.

The aromatics lead with lavender and pressed violet, olive tapenade, stone dust, and a curl of spiced orange peel, more perfume than fruit at first. On the palate it turns distinctly savory and umami-driven, with smoky, five-spice inflections and a saline, wet-st

Tasted as a barrel sample, the 2023 Syrah The Rocks District Of Milton Freewater spent 18 months on the lees. It’s savory, structured, and infused with lavender, boysenberry, dark earth, wet stones, and olive tapenade, and made with 50% stem inclusion via a “sandwich method” (stems in the center). Full-bodied but not heavy, with silky texture and youthful fruit, drink 2027-2040. (Jeb Dunnuck, August 2026)

Savoury and poised, this Syrah, a blend of two Rocks District sites, Rockbar and River Rock Vineyard, expresses the classic terroir of this region, one that stands alone in its expression here in the New World. Aromas of dense bramble berries, smoke, Chinese five spice and dessicated violets. The palate exhibits a lively elegance that is often lacking in wines from this appellation. There’s a lift to the red fruits that streak through an umami-driven flavour profile of hoisin, smoky soy and Moroccan spices.v. (Decanter, August 2025)

Vinous

The 2023 Syrah The Rocks District opens with a beguiling bouquet of sweet lavender and violet pastille, olive, stone dust and nuances of spiced orange peel. Distinctly savory within, it presents silken textures and saline mineral tones up front, followed by citrus-infused red and black fruits that add tension toward the close. Perfumed and long, the 2023 leaves a spicy sensation and an air of incense that lingers. In 2023, Evan Woods allowed maceration to continue for 45 days to find more of a Cornas-like structure from The Rocks. (Vinous)
