Description

Martinelli's 2022 Pinot Noir from Bondi Home Ranch, their coolest vineyard in Green Valley of Russian River Valley, shows the deeper color and savory complexity that comes from a long, patient growing season. The wine carries scents of kirsch and ripe spice alongside pine and forest floor, with a floral and incense-tinged backdrop that hints at its potential for aging.

On the palate, this is a wine of real substance and balance. It opens mouthwatering and pure, with a broader frame than you might expect, ripe tannins that feel integrated rather than austere, and fresh acidity that keeps everything moving. Red cherry and dried plum sit at the center, while a long finish lingers with spice and that incense note. The wine drinks beautifully now, but it has the structure and depth to reward patience over the next decade or more.

Coming from the estate’s coolest Russian River Valley vineyard, which is also the first to bloom and last to come in at harvest, the 2022 Pinot Noir Bondi Home Ranch pours a deeper ruby red color and offers deeper layered, savory aromas of kirsch, pine, ripe spice, and pressed flowers, and mossy forest earth. Mouthwatering and persistent from the jump, it’s pure and long on the palate, with a broader feel, ripe tannins, and balanced, fresh acidity. This feels the most like the grand cru of these wines from Martinelli and really takes things to the next level in terms of completeness. Offering a lasting touch of incense on the back palate, it sure is fantastic now, and it’s only going to improve with time. Drink over the next 15 or more years. One of the most historic names in Sonoma, the Martinellis are sixth-generation winegrowers based in the heart of the Russian River Valley. Prolific farmers, all of their wines come from estate-grown fruit, with 90% of the grapes sold off to other wineries. In addition to focusing on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, they also produce Zinfandel, Syrah, and Muscat of Alexandria. Courtney Robinett Wagoner joined the team in 2015 as the assistant winemaker before being promoted to winemaker in 2017. (Jeb Dunnuck, June 2024)

The 2022 Pinot Noir Bondi Home Ranch is scented of red cherries, dried plums and milk chocolate. The medium-bodied palate has dense, ripe flavors with just enough rounded acidity and a long, red-cherry finish. Drink it over the next few years. 725 cases produced.
