Grown in the hills of Avellino, in inland Campania, Fiano is a white grape prized for its structure and mineral cut, and this bottling from Mastroberardino is a serious expression of it. The 2019 draws fruit from four vineyard sites and sees most of its aging in stainless steel, with a small portion (around ten percent) in barrique, a light touch that keeps the wine tight and focused rather than oak-inflected. Production is limited.
Give it a few minutes in the glass; a faint reductive note lifts to reveal soft citrus, white peach, pear and a hint of something more exotic. There is an aromatic burst here, ground ginger, cumin, incense and crushed green apple, and a texture that plays sweet ripe fruit against a twist of lemon zest and brisk acidity. The flinty, stony signature runs through the whole thing, and the finish stretches long with a pleasantly bitter edge that keeps pulling you back for another sip.

The Mastroberardino 2019 Fiano di Avellino Riserva Stiléma takes a few extra minutes to express itself. That slight hint of initial reduction blows off to reveal soft citrus, exotic fruit, white peach and pear. The wine's flinty mineral signature is well defined. Fruit is sourced from four vineyard sites, and the wine is mostly aged in stainless steel with just 10% in barrique. Production is 6,700 bottles. (Wine Advocate, November 2023)
The 2019 Fiano di Avellino Riserva Stilema is aromatically intense, with a burst of ground ginger, cumin, incense and crushed green apples. This is a seductress, with a sweet burst of ripe fruit up front that is quickly contrasted by a twist of lemon zest and brisk acidity. The incredibly fresh, the 2019 is also impossibly long, finishing with a sensation of liquid stone and a pleasantly bitter tinge that calls me back to the glass for more. (Vinous)
