Description

Aglianico is southern Italy's answer to the great structured reds of the north, a grape built on firm tannin and vibrant acidity, and in the hills of Taurasi it reaches its fullest expression. This is Mastroberardino's black-label bottling from the 2019 vintage, a Campanian red that shows the depth and vertical lift the variety is capable of when it is given the patience it demands.

Expect an intense, brambly nose that layers cloves and incense over crushed stone, dried black cherry, and the resinous, faintly petrol-like tones that come with a bit of age. For all that concentration the wine stays light on its feet, a silken texture carrying tart wild berries, cumin, and spice across a stream of bright acidity. It finishes long and youthfully tense, with black licorice, a mineral edge, and a sour cranberry crunch that lingers. Still coiled and worth cellaring, but rewarding for those who like their reds savory and alive.

The 2019 Taurasi Radici is impossible to ignore, mixing cloves with incense, crushed stones and dried black cherries. This is saturating and intense, with a silken textural wave that ushers in masses of tart wild berry fruits and spices, all carried by a stream of vibrant acidity. It finishes long and youthfully tense, with a mineral tinge that lingers along with notes of black licorice and a sour cranberry crunch. In 2019, the Taurasi Radici is back to form. (Vinous)

Wine Advocate

In the bottle with the black label, the Mastroberardino 2019 Taurasi Radici is a brambly and intense wine with dark fruit, resin and petroleum jelly. Those tertiary tones have taken hold for sure, but the mouthfeel is graciously not too heavy or thick. Texturally, it remains light on its feet, with hints of cumin, spice and dried berry fruit. This is an ample release of 75,000 bottles that to me has more depth and verticality compared to the two Naturalis Historia wines from 2018. (Wine Advocate, October 2025)
