Washington's Columbia Valley gives Cabernet Sauvignon a particular tension between ripeness and lift, and this 2021 from Matthews Winery draws on that range directly, pulling fruit from sites across the Horse Heaven Hills, Red Mountain, and Royal Slope. It is Cabernet-led but rounded out with about 15% Merlot and small portions of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Fermented in stainless steel and aged nineteen months in French oak, only a quarter of it new, it keeps the wood in a supporting role.
The nose leans savory and mineral, with smoky violet, crushed stone, and a graphite edge over dusty berries. On the palate it is crisp and finely textured, layering dried black cherry, plum skin, and dark brambled fruit against a thread of pencil lead. A peppery, spicy tinge runs through it, juicy acidity keeps everything moving, and the tannins, though structured, come across as sweet rather than grippy. It finishes long, with a faint licorice note and a fresh, almost crunchy snap.
