Description

Grenache leads the way here, as it usually does in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, filled out with Syrah, Mourvèdre and small proportions of Cinsaut and Counoise in a classic Southern Rhône blend. This is the 2023 red from Clos du Calvaire, a separate cuvée from the Mayard family's holdings in the appellation. The grapes are grown organically, destemmed, fermented in concrete and then raised in large foudres, an approach that favors fruit clarity over heavy oak.

Expect a swirl of ripe red fruit, raspberry and black cherry, threaded with the dried herbs and garrigue that mark the region, plus a lift of mint and a touch of clove. It carries real weight across the palate, full-bodied and supple, with ripe tannins giving shape and acidity keeping everything in proportion. The alcohol runs warm, gently so, in keeping with the style, and the finish holds. A well-balanced, quite traditional expression of the appellation.

A separate offering from the Clos du Calvaire, the 2021 Châteauneuf du Pape Père Pape was still maturing in foudre last summer. Cherry and black cherry notes dominate the nose, but it still has intriguing herbal nuances that resemble mint. Full-bodied on the palate, this is supple and harmonious, despite a touch of warmth on the finish.

Slight garrigue and herbal touch to the pure raspberry fruit. Gentle, but has some enveloping weight and fruit on the palate. Acidity is well balanced, the alcohol gently warming but not unbalanced for the style. Good length too. An appealing, quite classic, well-proportioned Châteauneuf. Grown organically, destemmed, fermented in concrete, aged in foudres.

Checking in at 15% alcohol, the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a blend of 55% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, 3% Cinsaut and 2% Counoise. Pale ruby-colored, a swirl of the glass reveals aromas of very ripe and predominantly red fruits, black cherry, dried herbs and cloves. Ripe tannins frame the full-body, concluding with a moderately long finish.
