Chardonnay grown in the southern reaches of the Mâconnais, this is a Premier Cru bottling of Pouilly-Fuissé from Meurgey-Croses, made in the 2021 vintage. Pouilly-Fuissé sits at the warmer end of white Burgundy, and its wines tend to marry orchard fruit with a stony backbone rather than lean on oak.
The nose is on the delicate side, apple blossom threaded with a faint smoky, flinty note. On the palate it opens with detail and precision, red apple giving way to candied orange peel and a clear mineral edge. There is real balance here, and the wine builds gently toward a finish that pulls together cleanly. A well-made bottle from a growing season that asked a lot of the producer.

The 2021 Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru has a light bouquet with apple blossom and subtle fumé scents. It just needs more intensity. The palate is well-balanced with a detailed entry. Red apple notes intermix with candied orange peel and minerals. Gently building towards its cohesive finish, this is a commendable Pouilly-Fuissé in a challenging growing season. Tasted blind at the BIVB tasting. (Vinous, August 2023)
