Old-vine Riesling from the middle Mosel, the kind of bottling that sets out to show the region's steep slate sites can deliver weight and depth alongside their famous nervy acidity. This is the 2022 Alte Reben (White Capsule) from Molitor, fruit drawn from mature vines across a spread of top parcels, and it carries just 12% alcohol, a reminder that intensity here comes from concentration rather than ripeness alone.
The nose is generous and layered, yellow-fruited with peach, mirabelle and ripe lemon, laced with the oily, mineral edge of crushed slate and lemon rind. On the palate it is crystalline and tightly wound, full-bodied and rich but still youthful, the acidity playful and bright rather than sharp. The finish runs long and complex, powerful yet lifted by that stony finesse the best Mosel sites are known for. Approachable now, with the structure to reward patience.
Expansive nose of yellow fruits, ranging from peach to mirabelle and ripe lemon. Compact and well-structured, this makes a bold and very harmonious statement for the Mosel sub-region most often associated with high acidity wines. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
Sourced from old vines in diverse top sites of the middle Mosel, the 2022 Riesling Alte Reben (White Capsule) opens with a dense and rich nose of super ripe and partly tropical fruits intermingled with oily notes of crushed slate and lemon rind. Silky, crystalline and tight on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich, very intense, still edgy and youthful Riesling with crystalline and playful acidity as well as the typical slate finesse of the Mosel's top sites. The finish is remarkably long and complex yet also powerful. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024 from AP 24 23. (Wine Advocate, October 2024)
