Description
Spätlese in the Mosel means grapes picked riper than the norm, which here translates to a Riesling with sweetness held in tension against the river valley's cool acidity. This is the Green Capsule bottling from Markus Molitor, drawn from the Wehlener Klosterberg site above the village of Wehlen, in the 2022 vintage. At 10% stated alcohol, it sits in that off-dry register the region does so well, and it is closed under natural cork.
The nose takes its time, leading first with something green and earthy, notes of grass, dust, and cool soil, before the fruit steps forward, fine and only just ripe, a reflection of the coolish character that marked the year. On the palate it is lush and dense, rich and intense, yet still wound tight and holding plenty in reserve. The finish is not fully open yet, which is to say this is a wine built to gain over time in the bottle.

The 2022 Riesling Wehlener Klosterberg Spätlese (Green Capsule) opens with a greenish, vegetal and almost dusty bouquet of grass and earth ,whereas the fruit aromas emerge only slowly but nobly, with a very fine and maybe just-ripe note representing the stunningly coolish character of 2022. Lush and dense on the palate, this is a rich and intense yet still tight and reserved Riesling with a finish that still doesn't sing, yet there is hope for good development in the bottle over the years to come. 10% stated alcohol.
