Description

Verdicchio is the Marche's great white grape, and in its Riserva form (which demands longer aging before release) it takes on a depth that the fresher bottlings only hint at. This is Montecappone's Utopia, a Castelli di Jesi Riserva Classico from the 2019 vintage, raised on its fine lees for a year with a small portion seeing oak. That extended lees contact is the key to its texture, and it shows.

What strikes first is the mouthfeel, creamy and almost glossy, closer to silk or a buttery pastry than to a lean white. The nose moves through brioche and sweet cream into baked peach and peach skin, with grilled herbs, mint, and a savory, almost bacon-fat edge. Underneath it all runs a brisk acidity that keeps everything crisp and lifted, and the finish is long, carrying a saline tinge and a mineral, iodine note. Built to reward some patience in the cellar.

Here's a wine that stands out immediately as something very special. The Montecappone 2019 Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Riserva Classico Utopia offers a very enticing bouquet with elements of honey, baked peach, grilled herb and even a touch of sizzled bacon fat. It ages on the fine lees for 12 months, and a small percentage goes into oak. I especially like the creamy, almost glossy, texture offered by this Riserva. There's good reason to feel optimistic for the aging future of this 7,000-bottle release. (Wine Advocate, October 2023)
