Description

White Rioja that takes itself seriously, this is a blend of Viura, Garnacha Blanca and Maturana Blanca drawn from sites with varied soils. Muga works only with the free-run must here, fermenting it in lightly toasted new French oak, then resting the wine on its lees for a few months before six months in new French barrels and a long stretch in bottle ahead of release. The 2022 comes from a warm, dry year, which lends a touch more flesh without loosening the wine's grip.

There is a mineral edge that runs through everything, salted almonds and wet stone against crunchy pear with a pithy bite. The oak reads as structure and lift rather than flavor, framing melon and nectarine, a waxy texture and a fine chalky grip on the palate. It finishes long and spiced, white pepper, cardamom and nutmeg trailing into a note of amaretto. Poised and a little austere in the best sense, with the backbone to reward some time in the cellar.

Decanter

A blend of Maturana, Garnacha Blanca and Viura from a range of sites with diverse soils. The free-run must, or 'mosto flor', is selected then fermented in lightly toasted new French oak casks. After resting on its lees for a few months, the wine is aged for six months in new French oak barrels, then spends 18 months in bottle before release. Fine mineral edge, salted almonds, wet stone, very poised. Crunchy pear with a pithy touch. Lingering spicy tail of white pepper, cardamom, nutmeg. My kind of wine, with a welcome austerity and intense backbone, finishing with a delicious touch of amaretto. Has a long life ahead of it. (Decanter, April 2026)

A perfumed nose with a touch of cream, spices and almonds to the white fruit of melon and nectarines. Waxy with good acidity, medium to full body and a bright, textured finish. Impressive length. A blend of 40% viura, 30% garnacha blanca and 30% maturana blanca. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

Vinous

Blended from 40% Viura, 30% Garnacha Blanca and 30% Maturana Blanca, the 2022 Blanco Reserva Flor de Muga shows a more refined oak profile than earlier releases. Nardos and fine wood mingle on the nose with pear, gentle compote, hints of fennel and tropical fruit. On the palate, it is rich yet fresh, with a delicate chalky texture, while oak provides structure and lift. The hot, dry year makes the wine slightly more developed, though tension remains. (Vinous, April 2026)
