Gran Reserva is Rioja's most patient category, a designation reserved for wines given long years in cask and bottle before release, and this bottling from Muga sits squarely in that classical tradition. Grown in the western, higher-elevation reaches of Rioja Alta, the 2019 Prado Enea leads with Tempranillo and fills it out with Garnacha and Graciano. It marks the first release of this wine since 2016 (none was made in 2017 or 2018), and it saw up to 31 months in cask, split four to one between French and American oak.
The aromatics layer blackberry, plum and elderberry against gentler herbal tones, cedar and a whisper of coconut from the barrel, and the bouquet keeps unfolding in the glass, adding spice and sweet oak nuance as it opens. On the palate there is real energy and clarity, the fruit carried by fine-grained tannins and a juicy core that pushes through a long finish. Faint coconut and caramel linger underneath without ever crowding the fruit. Structured but vibrant, it balances power against freshness in a way that should reward keeping for many years.

Since the 2016 vintage, and with no wine made in 2017 or 2018, the 2019 Prado Enea Gran Reserva marks the first release, blending Tempranillo with Garnacha and Graciano from high-elevation vineyards in the western reaches of Rioja Alta. Up to 31 months in cask followed, with 80% French oak and 20% American. Layered aromatics of blackberry, plum and elderberry are framed by delicate herbal tones, cedar and a hint of coconut from the élevage. As it opens, the bouquet gains complexity and reveals subtle spice and sweet oak nuances. On the palate, notable energy and clarity of fruit are supported by fine-grained tannins and a juicy core that carries the flavors effortlessly through the finish. Gentle notes of coconut and caramel linger in the background, adding depth without overshadowing the fruit. Structured yet vibrant, this vintage captures the classical balance of Prado Enea, power moderated by freshness and length. Beautifully composed, this Rioja should age gracefully for decades.
