Niepoort's 2019 Late Bottled Vintage Port is made in the serious, unfiltered style of the category, sealed with cork rather than a screwcap. Bottled in 2023 after four years in cask, it sits between an everyday tawny and a true Vintage Port in structure and aging potential. The 2019 vintage was a complete one for the Douro, and this wine carries the region's dark fruit intensity and fine tannin structure.
The wine shows vivid forest-fruit character with real clarity and juice, its texture silky and the tannins refined. There's sweetness on the palate (100 grams of residual sugar), but it's cushioned by sturdy structure rather than cloying. Drink it now for immediate pleasure, or cellar it; the tannins are still gripping enough that time in bottle will add complexity and soften the edges. This is the kind of Port that rewards patience but won't punish you for opening it young, a reminder that the LBV category offers genuine depth at fair value.

The 2019 Late Bottled Vintage Port is unfiltered and closed with a cork, the serious style of this category, from a very good year in the style of 2005 or 2015 that can age for decades. It has 100 grams of sugar and is velvety and really a mini Vintage Port, aged for a bit longer in cask (but short for the category) and bottled in its fourth year. It's still tannic and a bit closed, with the tannin is cushioning the sweetness. It could be drunk now but should be a lot more complex with time in bottle. It has balance with a big structure, able to age for a long time. 2019 was a very complete year for Port. They produced 100,000 bottles of this. It was bottled in 2023. (Wine Advocate, April 2024)
