Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is the second wine of Ornellaia, the celebrated Bolgheri estate. The 2023 vintage is a Bordeaux blend, primarily Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, made in the structured, age-worthy style of its Tuscan coastal home.
This is a wine of considerable depth and dark intensity. The palate fills with ripe dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, leather, licorice and warming spice, framed by toasted oak and hints of vanilla and cinnamon. The tannins are firm and finely drawn, with a salty mineral edge that lends refinement to the overall architecture. There is real power here, held in check by careful balance, though the oak remains prominent and will benefit from time to settle. This is a wine best given some patience, either in the bottle or in the glass with aeration.

The 2021 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia packs a huge punch. Masses of dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, leather, licorice and cloves saturate the palate. I don't remember a Serre Nuove with this much sheer power and somber intensity, but the balance is there, especially with aeration. It will be interesting to see how the 2021 develops. Today it is quite the powerhouse.
The 2021 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is a nicely extracted and rich blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This vintage is very generous, even opulent, with dark fruit that is framed by exotic spice, baking chocolate and softly toasted tones from French oak. The wine ends on a creamy note with vanilla and cinnamon. The oak needs a few more years to integrate.
