Bovale is one of Sardinia's own red grapes, less traveled than the island's Cannonau but capable of real charm in the right hands. This bottling from Pala is an IGT wine from the 2021 vintage, made in an unfussy, varietally driven style that keeps the fruit forward and the frame supple.
It opens with fresh mint and wild flowers lifting over crushed blackberries, and it moves across the palate with an easy, pliant feel. Cool-toned acidity keeps things lively, the ripe wild-berry fruit picking up a tactile, almost mineral edge toward the finish. Fine tannins leave a light coating without drying anything out, and the wine stays juicy all the way through. Nicely made and comfortable to drink now.
A pretty display of fresh mint and wild flowers complements crushed blackberries as the 2021 Bovale Essentija opens in the glass. This soft and pliant effort sweeps across the palate with ease, with cool-toned acidity and ripe wild berry fruits that take on a tactile mineral tinge toward the close. The 2021 leaves a coating of fine tannins but remains juicy. This is nicely done but lacks the complexity of past vintages. (Vinous)
