Description

The 2014 growing season in Barolo tested growers, but the wines that emerged often outran expectations, and this Riserva from Parusso is a case in point. It comes from Vigna Rocche, a parcel within the Bussia cru in the heart of Piedmont's Barolo zone, and it is bottled from Nebbiolo as a Riserva, meaning extended aging before release. Production here was small, a little over a thousand bottles.

The color holds a classic garnet, and the aromatics run toward dried fruit and currant, dried flowers and plum, with smoky top notes of spice, licorice and campfire ash. There is real complexity underneath, truffle, dark cherry, espresso and a hint of chocolate. The tannins are firm but well knit, the frame medium-bodied, and the finish tightens toward a lean, slightly austere close. The mouthfeel is the standout, supple and polished, and the wine is showing openly now rather than asking for years of patience.

One of two Riservas with a gold label, the Parusso 2014 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Rocche was born in a controversial vintage that proved quite challenging during the growing season but that ultimately delivered wines that exceeded expectations. This bottle shows a careful dosing of dried fruit and currant with smoky end notes of spice, licorice and campfire ash. The tannins are nicely integrated, and the mouthfeel is the prettiest part of the experience. The wine's garnet appearance is intact. Production is limited to 1,160 bottles. Lots of dried flowers, plums and prunes with hints of stems follow through to a medium body, with firm tannins and a slightly lean finish. Tight and slightly austere at the end. Late release from the winery. Drink now. (James Suckling)
