Description

Nebbiolo grown in the Castiglione Falletto corner of Barolo, bottled by Parusso as a single-site expression from the 2018 vintage. This is the more powerful of the estate's cru bottlings, drawing on riper, darker fruit and turning it into something concentrated and firmly built, with the whole-cluster character and the large-scale tannins that Nebbiolo from this ground tends to give. At 15% alcohol it is a serious, full-scale wine, but a fragrant one.

The color is pale, an orange-tinged red that belies how much is going on. The nose is unusually expressive, all perfumed cherry, dried flowers and potpourri with an edge of cola and caramel spice, plus bright floral lift, kirsch and orange peel. On the palate it runs precise and linear, cherry-stone and coffee flavors carried by good acidity and a mouthwatering freshness that reads more savory than sweet. What really holds the attention is the mineral, stony grip that takes hold mid-palate. Driven and taut for now, elegant, and clearly built to reward patience.

Wine Advocate

The Parusso 2018 Barolo Mariondino is a bigger and more concentrated wine compared to the Perarmando. With fruit from Castiglione Falletto, it also has what tastes like riper, darker and more fleshed-out fruit flavors. This wine delivers lots of power (with 15% alcohol), stems, structure and large-scale tannins, as expected. It's a lot to take in. 6,300 bottles were produced. (Wine Advocate, June 2022)

Vinous

Parusso's 2018 Barolo Mariondino is a gorgeous, effusive wine. Bright floral accents, kirsch, orange peel, new oak, spice and mint give the 2018 its sculpted, chiseled personality. There is terrific cut and energy here. This is an especially fine showing from the Mariondino. (Vinous, February 2022)

Decanter

Light orange red colour in the glass. Unusual but super expressive nose, really fragrant cherry notes, delicately perfumed, but so distinct - like pot pourri, dried flowers with touches of cola and caramel. Precise and driven on the palate, certainly with a distinct coffee, cherry stone flavour. Good acidity, juicy, mouthwatering and incredibly fresh - freshly picked strawberries and cherries - but it's the savoury touch with a real mineral stone cleanliness that grips the tongue and takes hold that is so captivating. Lovely depth on the mid palate, quite a driven style but very linear, direct and taught at the moment. More savoury than overtly fruity. Super elegant. (Decanter, February 2022)
