Nebbiolo grown in Castiglione Falletto, at the heart of the Barolo zone, gives this Parusso its address, a high-altitude parcel of sandy soils and old vines worked to a cool micro-climate. The 2019 is a single-site bottling (the one with the orange label), more streamlined and precise than some of its cellar-mates, with a small production behind it. This is Barolo in its more aromatic, detailed register rather than its brawniest one.
Expect wild cherry and black cherry alongside iris, rose petal and dried flowers, with lavender, licorice, tea leaf and a suggestion of blood orange that keeps the fruit lifted. There is a savory, brooding side too: tar, dried herbs, crushed stone and graphite. The palate is broad and persistent but firmly wound, with grippy, powdery tannins and a wet-stone, faintly saline mineral bite that carries the finish. Mouthwatering freshness runs through the whole thing. Young and potent now, it rewards patience.
The Parusso 2019 Barolo Mariondino (in the bottle with the orange label) draws its fruit from Castiglione Falletto at the heart of the appellation. The wine presents fine aromas and a slightly more streamlined style compared to some of the other wines in this portfolio. There is wild cherry, iris root, crushed stone, licorice and tea leaf. The wine shows a tight structure and grippy tannins. Some 6,000 bottles were made. (Wine Advocate, August 2023)
The 2019 Barolo Mariondino is gorgeous. Broad and ample, the Mariondino impresses with its persistence and spherical feel. Black cherry, spice, lavender, menthol and dried flowers infuse the 2019 with striking depth. In 2019, the Mariondino is especially resonant and expansive, with striking depth and fine balance. Sandy soils and a cool micro-climate in this parcel yield a Barolo with tons of floral presence and a distinctive blood orange note that add freshness. (Vinous, January 2023)
Rose petals and baked cherries on the nose, really very fragrant yet delicately expressed with burnt caramel tone and lovely freshness. Intense and driving on the palate, tannins hit you square in the mouth, giving the grip (powdery yet present) as the savoury elements of dried herbs, tar and minerality come through. Neatly presented, everything is quite firm, direct, in place, with a gorgeous mouthwatering freshness but the tannins and mineral, graphite, salty, wet stone grip is very much at the fore right now. I like the clean, slightly granular texture that lingers. Strawberry, cherry, herbal raspberry - but definitely savoury not fresh, not sweet, more brooding. This has power and intensity - a deep core of flavour. Youthful and somewhat potent in the slight heat on the finish but very compelling. Precise and detailed. From high altitude (290m) old vines (20-40 years) in Castiglione Falletto. (Decanter, February 2023)
