Nebbiolo grown in Castiglione Falletto, one of the communes at the heart of Barolo, gives this bottling from Parusso its shape. The Mariondino is a single-site expression, drawn from vines set on sandstone marl and sandy soils in a cool pocket of the zone, and the 2020 vintage leans into aromatic lift rather than sheer power. This is a mid-weight Barolo, taut and precise in build.
Expect a nervy, high-toned character: tropical notes of papaya and dried apricot mingle with something waxy and candied, almost like scented wax or soft fruit chews. Bright acids run through the palate and firm, stemmy tannins hold the line, giving the wine a taut, slightly idiosyncratic personality. Pretty and punchy at once, it rewards patience but already shows plenty of freshness.
The Parusso 2020 Barolo Mariondino, with fruit from Castiglione Falletto, shows topical papaya, scented candle, dried apricot and waxy Starburst candy. There is ample freshness, and the tannins are stemmy and firm over a mid-weight palate. These vines are planted on typical sandstone marl and sandy soils. Production is 5,000 bottles. The 2020 Barolo Mariondino is bright, punchy and also a bit nervous. Bright acids and firm tannins give the Mariondino its taut personality. Sandy soils in a cool micro-climate confer aromatic lift. This medium-bodied Barolo is idiosyncratic but also quite pretty. (Vinous, January 2024)
