Description

Mosconi is a Barolo cru known for producing potent, structured wines, and this bottling from Parusso leans fully into that character. Made from Nebbiolo in Piedmont's Barolo zone, the 2019 comes from a generally concentrated vintage, and the house style here, marked by an expressive use of skins and stems, gives it a broader, richer frame than you might expect. This is a wine built for the long haul rather than immediate gratification.

The color is a medium-dark garnet, and the nose opens with red rose petal, dried cherry skin, and a note of crème de cassis, joined by baked strawberry, menthol, sage, graphite, and leather. On the palate it is deep and muscular, with huge, fleshy tannins that fill the mouth and give both weight and grip. The fruit is still tucked behind those tannic walls at this stage, but a vein of racy acidity runs underneath and keeps everything lively and fresh. Liquorice and savory spice linger, the finish carrying a taut, dry edge. Give it time to come together.

Wine Advocate

Showing a medium-dark garnet color, the Parusso 2019 Barolo Mosconi (with 5,500 bottles made) reveals some of those distinctive aromas of skins and stems that are the hallmark of the house style. These give the wine a broader and richer profile that fits well in a generally more concentrated vintage such as this. Red rose petal, crème de cassis and dried cherry skin emerge from the bouquet. This wine promises a long aging evolution. (Wine Advocate, August 2023)

Vinous

The 2019 Barolo Mosconi is a deep, powerful wine. Huge swaths of tannin are pretty overpowering at this stage. Then again, this is Mosconi, where Barolos are typically quite potent. It will be interesting to see if the fruit emerges over time. Dark plum, menthol, leather sage and graphite lend character. I suspect the 2019 will be stellar if given the time to come together. Decanter

Baked strawberries, almost stewed, fragrant pink flowers give the light, lifted and pretty aromas on the nose. Supple and forthright, this is bigger and more plush than Mariondino with tannins that are fleshy and fill the palate giving weight and grip at the same time. The fruit is a little hidden behind the walls of tannins but there's an undercurrent of absolute freshness and together with the racy acidity gives a sense of liveliness overall. Ample and generous yet still closed in terms of fruit forwardness, still with a vein of liquorice and savoury spice. Massy and full, it's muscular yet still quite taught and the lingering impression is a little tannic and dry, the oak stil playing a part. (Decanter, February 2023)
