Description

Grown high on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, this is a single-contrada bottling of Nerello Mascalese, Sicily's mountain red grape, from Passopisciaro. The fruit comes from Contrada Porcaria at 650 meters above sea level, farmed and vinified with unusual care in 2022: an early-August hailstorm pushed harvest about ten days forward and cut yields by roughly a quarter, so the grapes were hand-sorted berry by berry and given shorter maceration to protect what made it into the cellar. The result is a lean, high-altitude Etna Rosso, bottled under the Terre Siciliane IGT.

The nose is fragrant and savory more than fruity, all wild scrub, dried herbs, and a wisp of smoke that lifts to reveal dried strawberry and rubbed sage. On the palate it's vertical and tight

Decanter

A whole percent less alcohol in 2022 compared to 2021, Contrada P (from Contrada Porcaria at 650m above sea level) features a lilting fragrance of wild scrub and petrichor with some austere dark fruits. In the mouth it's vertical and seems to lack some of the fruit you'd expect to fill out the palate and balance the acidity. Some ripe black cherry lurks in the background, tightly coiled, while some fresh herbs and a subtle sweetness weave through the core. Needs a bit of time to harmonise and put on weight in the bottle, but there's plenty of potential. (Decanter, February 2025)

Vinous

Spicy and mineral in style, the 2022 Etna Rosso Contrada Porcaria opens with a whiff of white smoke, blowing off to reveal dried strawberries and rubbed sage. It's soft-textured with medium-bodied weight, offset by zesty acidity, crisp minerality and tart wild berry fruits. It finishes with a tart concentration and edgy tannins yet maintains fantastic freshness. Due to hail at the beginning of August, the 2022 was harvested ten days earlier than usual, with a 25% reduction in yields. Passopisciaro made sure to use all hand-sorting, berry by berry, and cut down on maceration times to ensure the quality of the wine. (Vinous)
