Description
Grown high on the northern flank of Etna, at 650 meters in the Contrada Porcaria, this is a single-site bottling of Nerello Mascalese from Passopisciaro, labeled Contrada P and released under the Terre Siciliane IGT. The 2022 is a lighter, cooler expression, carrying about a full percent less alcohol than the year before. Hail in early August forced a harvest roughly ten days ahead of schedule and cut yields by a quarter, so the fruit was sorted berry by berry and given shorter maceration to protect what came in.
The nose leans toward wild scrub and petrichor, a whiff of white smoke, dried strawberry and rubbed sage over austere dark fruit. On the palate it runs vertical and finely built, the ripe black cherry coiled tightly in the background while fresh herbs and a thread of sweetness move through the core. Zesty acidity, crisp minerality and edgy tannins give it a taut, spicy frame, and the finish holds its freshness even as it turns tart and concentrated. Young and a touch reserved now, it should gain weight and harmony with time in the bottle.

A whole percent less alcohol in 2022 compared to 2021, Contrada P (from Contrada Porcaria at 650m above sea level) features a lilting fragrance of wild scrub and petrichor with some austere dark fruits. In the mouth it's vertical and seems to lack some of the fruit you'd expect to fill out the palate and balance the acidity. Some ripe black cherry lurks in the background, tightly coiled, while some fresh herbs and a subtle sweetness weave through the core. Needs a bit of time to harmonise and put on weight in the bottle, but there's plenty of potential. (Decanter, February 2025)
Spicy and mineral in style, the 2022 Etna Rosso Contrada Porcaria opens with a whiff of white smoke, blowing off to reveal dried strawberries and rubbed sage. It's soft-textured with medium-bodied weight, offset by zesty acidity, crisp minerality and tart wild berry fruits. It finishes with a tart concentration and edgy tannins yet maintains fantastic freshness. Due to hail at the beginning of August, the 2022 was harvested ten days earlier than usual, with a 25% reduction in yields. Passopisciaro made sure to use all hand-sorting, berry by berry, and cut down on maceration times to ensure the quality of the wine. (Vinous)
