Description

Cool-climate Chardonnay from Gippsland in southeastern Victoria, this is the Bull Swamp bottling from Patrick Sullivan, a 2024 grown in one of Australia's more maritime, restrained corners for the grape. It comes in at 13.8% alcohol and is sealed under Diam and wax. Expect a wine built for tension and precision rather than weight, and one that is still very young.

The aromatics start shy and slowly unfurl: white flowers and lanolin, musky peach, grapefruit and lemon pith, with dried fennel seed and a touch of ginger giving savory lift. Spicy oak sits neatly in the frame, joined by a smoky, gunflint edge and hints of nougat and crushed salted nuts. The texture is creamy and generous, but a phenolic grip and penetrating, mouthwatering acidity keep everything taut through a long finish. It drinks well now, though a year or two in the cellar will let the citrus and tropical notes settle into fuller focus.

Vinous

The youthful and beautifully composed 2024 Chardonnay Bull Swamp shows superb definition with shy floral, musky peach and grapefruit aromas alongside perfectly placed spicy oak. This is still embryonic, with nougat and gunflint lifting tight, unevolved citrus and tropical tones. Classically proportioned with a long, strong finish, this is a benchmark Gippsland Chardonnay. Wine Advocate

The 2024 Bull Swamp Chardonnay leads with lanolin and white flowers, dried fennel seeds, ginger root, lemon pith and lantana. The wine is rich; a feast of salted/crushed nuts, plump creamy texture and an attractive phenolic tension through the finish. This is a lovely wine, detailed and delicious. The acidity is a highlight—penetrating and sapid. It will be better in a year or two. This comes recommended. 13.8% alcohol, sealed under Diam and wax. (Wine Advocate, June 2025)
