Northern Rhône Syrah reaches one of its more perfumed expressions in Côte-Rôtie, where the grape often carries a small proportion of Viognier and leans toward floral aromatics alongside its darker fruit. This is Pierre Jean Villa's Carmina bottling from the 2022 vintage, a Syrah grown on the steep slopes above the Rhône, made in the region's tradition of pairing structure with an unmistakable savory lift.

The 2022 Cote Rotie Carmina from Villa, crafted entirely from Syrah sourced primarily from the northern part of the appellation, reveals a dense, complex bouquet of dark berries, violets, spices, pepper and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, harmonious and precise, it’s framed by fine-grained, velvety tannins, with a layered, delicate mid-palate that transitions into a refined licorice, gently mineral finish. With 55% whole bunches, this stunning, focused Côte Rôtie was matured for 15 months in large barrels, followed by an additional eight months blended in foudres. It will evolve gracefully over the next two decades. (Wine Advocate, February 2025)
