Nebbiolo from the Barolo zone takes on a particular gravity in Serralunga d'Alba, and this bottling from Rivetto dal 1902 comes from the Briccolina cru within it. It is farmed organically and held back a year longer than most Barolo, with 36 months spent in Swiss-made oak casks before release. The 2018 is a small, top-shelf production.
The color leans toward a dark garnet, and the aromatics have begun to settle, offering dried fruit and the faded scent of crushed flowers rather than primary fruit. It drinks with a sense of maturity, more open and approachable than you might expect from a wine of this address, and it finishes on tannins that are dry and dusty. A Barolo that shows its evolution rather than its youth.
The organic Rivetto dal 1902 2018 Barolo Briccolina is released one year later than its peers, following 36 months of aging in Swiss-made oak casks. Packaged in a bottle with a bright blue label, the wine shows a dark garnet appearance with slightly faded aromas of dried fruit and crushed flowers. This wine feels more mature compared to the 2019 Barolo, which has fruit from across Serralunga d'Alba, and the charming new Barbaresco Nervo. I would choose both of those wines over this top-shelf production, which closes with dry, dusty tannins and is more accessible overall. This is a 2,500-bottle release. (Wine Advocate, August 2023)
