Rocca di Frassinello's Ornello is a four-varietal blend from Maremma Toscana, in southern Tuscany, combining Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. The 2023 vintage shows the richness and structure this region is known for, built on a foundation of dark fruit and savory depth.
Black cherry, blackberry, and plum dominate the center of the palate, framed by toasty oak that doesn't overwhelm the fruit. Iron and herbal notes thread through, while crushed flowers and dried leaves add aromatic complexity. The wine is broad and beefy in its presence, yet maintains polish and balance, with floral accents returning on the finish to provide precision and lift. This is a wine that will benefit from a few years of bottle age, allowing its layered flavors to settle and integrate further.

#23 in Top 100, 2025. Well-marked by toasty oak, yet there are saturated flavors of black cherry, blackberry and plum embedded in this powerful red. Though broad and beefy, this is also polished and complex, with a persistent, fruit-filled aftertaste. Iron and herb accents add detail. Sangioveto, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Best from 2026 through 2038.
The 2023 Ornello is a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Crushed flowers, iron, dried leaves, blood orange, incense, tobacco and macerated red cherry fill out the layers nicely. Floral notes reappear on the finish, adding precision and lift.
